An upcoming maintenance and repair project will require a full three-day closure of Southeast Auburn-Black Diamond Road where it crosses the Green River near Highway 18. The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 12, and end at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14.
The King County Road Services Division will repair and resurface the 57-year-old Neely Bridge, which serves about 3,500 cars on weekdays and up to 1,800 on weekends. The county will remove damaged parts of the bridge surface and overlay the deck with a double coating of epoxy and sand. This work will take place during daylight hours.
A full closure is needed because the bridge isn’t wide enough to safely accommodate both work crews and traffic, and to allow the epoxy coating to cure before the bridge reopens to traffic.
Drivers should plan extra travel time and follow alternate routes, which include Southeast Green Valley Road, 218th Avenue Southeast, and Southeast Auburn-Black Diamond Road. Another option is to take Highway 18 and Kent-Black Diamond Road.
King County will work to minimize project impacts. If conditions are favorable, the bridge may reopen early.
Note: this work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled.
