SE Auburn-Black Diamond Road to close for three-day bridge repair, Aug. 12-14

An upcoming maintenance and repair project will require a full three-day closure of Southeast Auburn-Black Diamond Road where it crosses the Green River near Highway 18. The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 12, and end at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14.

The King County Road Services Division will repair and resurface the 57-year-old Neely Bridge, which serves about 3,500 cars on weekdays and up to 1,800 on weekends. The county will remove damaged parts of the bridge surface and overlay the deck with a double coating of epoxy and sand. This work will take place during daylight hours.

A full closure is needed because the bridge isn’t wide enough to safely accommodate both work crews and traffic, and to allow the epoxy coating to cure before the bridge reopens to traffic.

Drivers should plan extra travel time and follow alternate routes, which include Southeast Green Valley Road, 218th Avenue Southeast, and Southeast Auburn-Black Diamond Road. Another option is to take Highway 18 and Kent-Black Diamond Road.

King County will work to minimize project impacts. If conditions are favorable, the bridge may reopen early.

Note: this work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled.

  1. Are you sure the auburn black diamond road will be closed? Or the SE Green Valley RD, which has the Neely bridge on it

      • Hi Susie,

      • Hello Susie,
Thank you again for contacting us. The maintenance work on Neely Bridge is underway. It’s located on SE Auburn-Black Diamond Road. The bridge is closed for this work from 8/12-8/14. Here’s a link to a map that shows the area and closure: http://bit.ly/2aaSBJx

  2. Yes, Susie. The confusion is historic, as the the bridge over Green River that goes up to Green River college was once called the Neely bridge, and our bridge which is so close to the Neely mansion on the Auburn-Black Diamond road really didn’t have a name. It would appear that has evolved!

  3. Also, to the DOT–you might provide just a few more details in your detour map: you do know that the Kent-Black Diamond road does not directly intersect HYW 18? I realize those of us who live here know these minor details, but there is a new church quite close on the Auburn-Black which draws huge numbers on the weekend and some of those folks may be a bit confused.

    • Hi Sandy, thank you so much for the feedback. We really appreciate it! We’ll keep folks updated on the project and detours. Thanks, DOT Staff
