King County is proposing to reduce the speed limit on a 980-foot segment of 244th Avenue NE south of SR 202. In this short section of road, 244th Avenue NE is posted at 40 mph. To the south, within the City of Sammamish, 244th Avenue NE is posted at 35 mph. The 40 mph segment is indicated in the map above by a red line.
The County conducted a speed limit evaluation to analyze the issue. Based on the findings of the evaluation, the County concluded that a speed limit reduction is justified from 40 mph to 35 mph between SR-202 and the Sammamish city limits. The revision is in keeping with the road alignment, prevailing speeds, limited sight distance, and the posted speed limit within Sammamish. Based on the engineering data, removing this variation in speed limit will create safer conditions and consistent driver expectation.
If the speed reduction is approved, signing revisions, including orange markers to notify motorists of the speed limit change, will be made by early fall 2018.
